Work Experience Interview
We recently welcomed Tom for a work experience placement with our team. During his time with us, he gained valuable insight into the industry, developed new skills, and got involved in a variety of projects. It was a pleasure having him with us, and we wish him all the best for the future.

What made you choose a work experience placement in cybersecurity?
I chose a work experience placement in cyber security because I am usually more of a sporty/active type of person, however a cyber security placement allowed me to see if a cyber type of job interested me. This also allowed me to gain experience into a different type of job role.
I also chose this placement because I didn't know much about how cyber security worked, these couple of days so far have helped me to understand some parts of cyber and I am intrigued to learn more.
What has been the most interesting thing you've learned during your time with us?
So far, the most interesting thing I have learnt in my time at 3CT is how you mark the cyber essentials checks and how to improve them to make them more accurate, I enjoyed this because I was able to see how much I understood the assignments that are given to a cyber security consultant, I was then able to compare my findings with Konrad, this allowed me to see how well I had done and where I needed to improve. This gave me more confidence when doing tasks because I knew what I had to look out for.
I also found it interesting how cyber security can lead to so many types of job titles, this interested me because I realised that even if cyber security isn't the exact thing I want to do there is so many more options that I can pick from that are involved in cyber.
Has anything surprised you about cybersecurity, compliance, or the work we do?
I was quite surprised that during the cyber essentials checks you must input and enter a lot of key information to make it compliant, this surprised me because I did not realise how much time and effort has to be put into these tests so that they are able pass for a cyber essentials certificate.
I was also surprised about the number of scans you have to run on a single device and how if a device has not been updated for a long time, the number of vulnerabilities it may have is really high, this surprised me a lot.
What has been your favourite part of the placement so far?
My favourite part of the placement so far is being able to join in on the calls with Joe. In them I am able to see exactly what type of scenarios I may be in if I want to proceed in a job that is compatible to this. It has been my favourite part so far because I was able to see how different clients react and respond to the tasks they have been requested to do, this allowed me to get a clear understanding of the different types of customers 3CT have to deal with, which I enjoyed.
I also enjoyed the food because it is superior to the school canteen and it also tastes much nicer.
Would you consider a future career in cybersecurity, and why?
I would potentially consider a career in cyber security because I would be able to work in an online environment which I enjoy, I would also be able to speak to clients about their needs which is much more interesting and exciting than emailing a client or customer every day. I also would like to learn new skills that would allow me to grow as a person, in cyber this would be possible because everyone is doing similar roles so if I don't know something those around me would help me to improve.
However, even if a role in cyber security isn't for me there are so many roles that have cyber in them, the experience and knowledge I have gained from this placement will allow me to understand the job that I may get with a greater understanding.
